What are free radicals
Free radicals are unstable oxygen molecules missing an electron. They steal electrons from healthy cells in the body. To a certain extent, free radicals are just part of being alive. They occur naturally during metabolism, from direct sunlight, from intake of sugary and fatty foods, from intoxicants –especially smoking — from stress, and even from exercise.
The best way to keep free radicals in proper balance is with antioxidants. Antioxidants work by donating electrons to free radicals so they can become a stable oxygen molecule again. Our body produces certain antioxidants to combat free radicals, but many of the necessary antioxidants must come from our diet. There are many different antioxidants that can be found in enzymes and vitamins. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables is a great way to get some antioxidants. Dietitians advise eating a variety of fruits and vegetables because multiple antioxidants work better together. Although you can buy antioxidant supplements, eating fresh foods with antioxidants is best.
Techniques to reduce free radicals:
Staying conscious of stress levels. When you start to feel stressed just stop and take a few deep breaths. Imagining yourself breathing in relaxation and breathing out stress or tension.
Try replacing high sugary and fatty foods with a fruit salad. Fruit salad takes care of those sugar cravings.
Cook a variety of vegetables together. Stir fries work well for this.
Wear sunblock daily that contains zinc or titanium dioxide and reduce exposure to the sun.
Be aware of the repercussions intoxicants have on your body. This way over time you may naturally want them less and less.
Have a well-rounded exercise routine of stretches, cardio, strength training and internal practices such as meditation.
